Polymer clay and hollow forms

November 14th, 2011 | Posted by Nicole in Polymer Clay - (0 Comments)

I just discovered how not to make hollow forms with polymer clay – here is one which didn’t go according to plan.

Looks like everything got a little too tight for the cross. Inside I have really really dry cork clay.

Polymer Clay around Cork Clay

Guess I should have kept an eye on it,- well I got distracted by some beads, when I got to the oven the temperature was sightly higher then it was supposed to be and the piece was in the oven much longer then planned. Most polymer clays need a temperature of between 110° C and 130° C,- well in this case the 130° C had turned into almost 150° C,- no fumes, but the clay clearly didn’t like it. Nothing discoloured, that happens very easily and quickly if the temperature goes over 130° C, in this case it was just that something didn’t fit.

So this one will stick around as a reminder, the next one will get all the attention it needs.

Polymer Clay Heart

Polymer Clay Heart

The big heart was a solid polymer clay piece,- so I thought it was time to try some cork clay inside the piece so that the end result would not be so heavy, I like heavy pendants, but it’s not something you would want to wear all day, so there has to be an alternative.

Cork clay was right beside my desk so it got the job and it’s easily shaped and very light. Only drawback is that it takes days to dry out – and waiting is not always my strong point. The polymer clay was well conditioned and spend forever (in clay time) going through the pasta machine.

Maybe the wrapping of the polymer clay around the cork clay was not perfect, it looked like there was plenty of room – allowing for expanding and shrinkage, but then,- you can’t see inside once everything is sealed.

Sometimes the material has its own plan anyway – not looking just gave it the opportunity to do what it wanted to – but we can turn these little hiccups into little pieces of art.

I am glad to say that so far this is the only piece that got injured, everybody else has been alright, there must have been something in the air that day.

More work in progress

October 13th, 2011 | Posted by Nicole in News - (0 Comments)

Those fine silver rings are nearly ready, they are sitting here waiting to be taken to the kiln. Another extra long firing to make sure they can do their job as rings.

Metal Clay Cross

So I have started working on the next thing… crosses seem to be ‘my’ in thing right now.. one fine silver cross is being worked on.. it’s big and will be a pendant filled with resin when it’s finished.  Please excuse the mess – I tend to concentrate on the piece, not the surroundings, that is something I have to deal with when the work is done. 🙂

I have also found some wonderful polymer clay, really nice and soft and can be shaped very easily,  – very quickly conditioned – I use the pasta machine – the colours are great.  So, the idea being, start with something simple – but big – here we go…

Polymer Clay Heart

This is a biiiiig heart, it will not be overlooked.  Another pendant is ready to go  – it just needs the right setting.

This type of polymer clay also cures harder then the stuff I have been working with so far, but not too hard – it won’t break. Looks like the right material for rings and bracelets.

Nearly forgot…  I have redirected my old website for the paintings, digital art and photos.  They can now be found in an Etsy shop.  www.etsy.com/shop/NicoleES2  I’m still adding items one by one.

Changes on online selling plattforms

July 19th, 2011 | Posted by Nicole in News - (0 Comments)

I have been thinking about it for a while and have decided that it is time to make some changes.

Finding a selling plattform for the english market has not been easy, being in germany I am not allowed to sell on some makets.

So anyway, the news is that there is now an etsy shop.  http://www.etsy.com/shop/Glasstwig

Why I didn’t do that in the first place?  I have no idea.

The artfire shop and the zibbet shop will remain sort of active, at least for a while.  However the number of articles in these shop has gone done quite a bit and I will be concentrating on the etsy shop for now, making sure it is stocked with lots of beautiful handmade jewellery.

So my main online shops, apart from www.glasstwig.com  will be DaWanda and etsy.  If you would like to me to move a piece of jewellery from one shop to another, because you prefer to buy through another plattform, no problem, just email me and I will move things as quickly as possible. We will see how it goes.

A short not so voluntary break

June 27th, 2011 | Posted by Nicole in News - (0 Comments)

So, after a short and not so voluntary break, I’m back.  Sometimes things don’t go the way we plan them. Not always a bad thing.

Been working on some new earrings and lots of other stuff, the work area looks like a right mess again, as long as I can find what I need, that’s ok with me.

Here are some of the new earrings.  There is also a red version with coral gems. There is also more resin stuff sitting on myself, waiting for that to cure before I move it and get dust on it. The earrings can be found in the shop www.glasstwig.com.  I have also added some items to the sale category and every now and again there is ‘special’.

Glass Fusing

At last – – they made it.  The parcel with the new, bright wonderful glass has arrived. It’s all Bullseye Glass.

The first pieces are already in the kiln.  These are of course just test pieces to see if they turn into cabochons that can actually be used and look the way I want them to.  I have even written down the firing schedule for a change, just to make sure I get the exact same program again if I need it.  Not that that was easy, too much information from all sides, will have to dry and see if it works for what I want it.  If everything turns out the way it is supposed to, I will be making for bright summer cabochons to add to some of my metal clay jewellery and maybe just some glass jewellery.  Here is some of the glass that will be going into the kiln.  I’ll post a short update about how the test went and what pieces will be worked on.  If things don’t turn out the way they should, it will be a post on what not to do or how to avoid things.

Waiting for supplies

April 12th, 2011 | Posted by Nicole in News - (0 Comments)

Oh dear, was going to finish some silver and glass rings this week.  But for some reason the delivery people have been driving around with my parcel for the past 5 days.  Hhhmm, maybe they want to test the stuff first.  So, have been working with the glass I have.  I like these colours, they are nice and bright, but there are even nicer ones (I think) coming.  As soon as they get here I will turn some into glass cabochons and then add them to some silver rings and pendants.  The parcel has to get here at some stage, right?

Here are some of the pieces I still have.  A lot of them are doing turns in a tumbler right now.

OK, I admit, I’m a little slow, or maybe just busy, yeah – busy.  But, even I have finally managed to setup a facebook business page.  I’ve added a couple of photos and will keep adding status updates.  The long stuff I will keep for the blog.  If you would like to have a look here is the link.  Thank you.
